Children’s DIY Building Block Costume

Children’s DIY Building Block Costume

We all know that children, and most adults if we’re honest about it, love to play with Lego building bricks and we just love the Morph Costume Co version of the Lego Man inspired unisex fancy dress which is available for both adult and children sizes.

But what about if money is short and yet you still want to achieve that toy box style Halloween or party costume look? Well, we’ve found this superb construction block costume by Ryan McPhail on the site Country Living which we think is a fantastic example of what can be achieved with some readily obtained and more importantly, relatively inexpensive items.

Some spray gloss paint, round boxes plus a larger box for the body will have you construction your own building block costume that will be hard to beat.

Follow these instructions to turn a plain old cardboard box into a costume with all the right angles.DIY Lego fancy dress instructions - Karnival Costumes online party shop blog

STEP 1: Cut off the bottom flaps of a box (ours measured 16"W × 29"H × 11"D) with a utility knife. Tape down the top flaps.

STEP 2: To create head and arm holes, trace a dinner plate on the top of the box and saucers on each of the box's sides, and cut out with the utility knife.

STEP 3: Lay the box flat on its back. Using wood glue, affix eight round 2"H x 4"diam. craft boxes (obtainable from your local hobby shop) — without their lids — in two vertical rows along the front, as shown. Make sure the bottoms of the craft boxes face out.

STEP 4: Once the glue has dried, spray-paint the entire piece glossy red. If necessary, coat multiple times for a brighter color, then let dry.  We would assume that spray paint has been used to avoid the boxes becoming water-saturated and sodden. We think that you might be able to apply multiple THIN coats of emulsion paint if you want and then apply a final varnish coat to achieve the shin, but a spray would work best.

With care and thought, this super costume idea will be scalable for larger children and adults.  It's a super DIY Costume idea. Thanks Ryan.
